How to Create a Content Calendar

A woman is working on her social media calendar online.

Content calendars are the bread and butter for social media marketers, and they make the job a lot easier! Whether you are using a scheduling tool or creating a schedule manually, there are a few basics you need to understand when creating a calendar, and I will talk about them with you in this article.

Pick a Format

There are many ways you can create your content calendar. You could utilize a scheduling tool that allows you to automate your posting schedule, or if you’re on a budget, try creating an excel spreadsheet. If you aren’t that savvy with spreadsheets, there are a lot of templates available on Etsy. You can find a few simple and affordable options I have created by clicking here!

Collect Your Content

Once you have selected the format you would like to use, it is time to gather all of the content you plan to schedule. Organize your content based on the order you would like to post each individual piece of content. If you are working with different clients, ensure that you have properly sorted them into separate content calendars to avoid any crossover mistakes.

Categorize by Platforms

Label each of your items or color code them based on the platform you would like to post them to. If you are using a scheduling tool, you should be able to easily separate and schedule your automatic posting by platform type. Labeling your posts will ensure that you do not accidentally double-post a piece of content onto one platform. It also helps with organization and reminds you which content is assigned to which platform.

Schedule Posting

The last step in creating your content calendar is scheduling your posts. Using an automated tool is as simple as clicking a few prompting buttons, but if you are posting manually and you have a heavy content flow, it can become a tedious task. After you have organized your calendar, set reminders on your frequently used devices with the content name and posting time!

Now that you understand the basics behind creating a content calendar, it is time to get to work! If you find you need more information on content calendars, you can always find additional information on YouTube. I have a few go-to content creators that I like to utilize when I need help visualizing or understanding new concepts, and you can find my top three channels in my previous blog linked here.
